US National Academy of Sciences elects Members, Foreign Associates

The National Academy of Sciences has announced the election of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Among them are two IMS Fellows, Trevor Hastie (who was elected a Member) and Simon Tavaré (who, being Australian, was elected a Foreign Associate).

Those elected this year bring the total number of active members to 2,382 and the total number of foreign associates to 484. Foreign associates are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States.

Trevor Hastie

Trevor Hastie is professor of statistics and John A. Overdeck Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Biomedical Sciences at Stanford University.

Simon Tavaré

The National Academy of Sciences recognizes achievement in science by election to membership, and, with the National Academies of Engineering and Medicine, provides science, engineering, and health policy advice to the US government and other organizations.
